How To Write SEO

We all know websites that rank highly on search engines like Google get a lot more traffic than those that don’t, but how can we make improvements to ensure our site beats its competitors?

In short, there’s no one answer to this question. Google’s Algorithm (it’s formula for ranking websites) is constantly adapting to changes in browsing habits, so for SEO the best we can do is try to meet as many of their suggestions as possible.

Hold on. What the hell is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, is the art of improving your content to help your website move higher up for targeted search phrases. Many factors are taken into account when ranking a website, so if we make improvements to meet these requirements we are Optimising our content specifically for Search Engines, and that’s known as SEO.

Content is king!

Search engines are in the business of displaying the most relevant web pages for any given search term, so how do we make our content more relevant than others?

Content writing requirements

If all the following criteria are met, each and every time you create a Page or Blog Post on your website, you’ll have a great starting point for getting your website ranked highly:

  1. Create a good title – Every page should have a unique title that contains specific key phrases
  2. Add at least 300 words to the content – Remember Content Is King, so to create a relevant page for any search term a decent amount of text should be created (Google is bound to consider other pages above yours if you only have a few sentences)
  3. Use Sub-Headings – H2, H3, H4 and H5 tags will help split your content into manageable chunks, whilst keywords in these headings will help to support those found in your title
  4. Add images – Images help to make a page more interesting, and Google knows this
  5. Add links – Linking to other useful pages on your website will help users find more content they might be looking for
  6. Add alt tags to images – Search engines can’t tell what images are by default, so you need to tag them with a Literal Description also known as the alt tag – this is also used by ‘screen readers’ to tell people who have impaired vision what the image is
  7. Add a unique Title & Description meta tag to every page –  These determine what will be displayed in a search result if your page ranks for a term

I’ve done everything on the list, but my site still isn’t ranking highly!

Writing well structured, content-rich blog posts regularly can be the single most effective tool when trying to get your website ranked higher on Google or other search engines, and the more pages you produce, the more likely you’ll get ranked highly. That being said, just because you have lots of well-written pages doesn’t necessarily mean your site is any better than it’s competitors. SEO takes many other factors into account, but if your blog posts and pages are written well, and you regularly add new content, you’ll be on the right track to building a content rich website.
